Kenneth Wayne Plaehn, 96, of Reinbeck, Iowa, passed away on Friday, December 27, 2019 at Parkview Manor in Reinbeck. Visitation will be held from 9:00 a.m. until time of funeral service at 10:30 a.m. on Monday, December 30, 2019 at the First Presbyterian Church in Reinbeck. Burial will follow at the Reinbeck Cemetery with military honors conducted by the Reinbeck American Legion Post # 242. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Kenny was born on December 10, 1923, north of Reinbeck in Grundy County, Iowa, to his parents Henry and Emma (Thiesen) Plaehn. He was one of ten children. He grew up in Reinbeck and graduated from Reinbeck High School in the class of 1943. Kenny then joined the United States Navy in March of 1944. He was assigned to the USS Murray 576 and served in the Pacific during World War II. He was honorably discharged on May 16, 1946 and returned to Iowa.

Kenny was united in marriage to Betty Lee Stum on November 19, 1948. Together they made their home in Reinbeck and welcomed four children into their family. In 1960 Kenny went to work for Noel Lorenz building houses and doing carpenter work until 1973. He then began working for the Reinbeck High School, performing maintenance at the high school, and then the Reinbeck Elementary School until his retirement in 1988 at the age of 65.

Kenny was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Reinbeck for over 70 years. He served the church as a deacon, a session member and on various other committees. Kenny loved spending time with his family, friends, neighbors, teachers, students and co-workers. He enjoyed traveling with his wife Betty, baking and watching college football and basketball on TV. Kenny was an active member of the Reinbeck American Legion Post # 242 and attended every monthly meeting of that organization until his passing.

Kenny is survived by his children Carole (Mike) Toyne, Curtis (Cindy) Plaehn, Calvin Plaehn and Tom Plaehn; grandchildren Clarinda (Dean Morrow) Plaehn-Morrow, Nathan Toyne, Mike (Tara) Toyne and Cody Plaehn; great-grandchildren Madelyn, Lucinda, Brandon, William, Hannah and Noah; sister Bernice Craig and brother Leonard Plaehn. He was preceded in death by his parents; his wife Betty; 3 sisters and 4 brothers.
