Rolland “Rolly” Howard Hummel, 83, of Reinbeck, passed away on June 5, 2019, at Parkview Manor Nursing Home in Reinbeck. A funeral service will be held on Saturday, June 8, at 10:30 AM at Saint John’s Lutheran Church in Reinbeck with Pastor Troy Peperkorn presiding. Visitation will be held at 9AM until the start of the service. Interment will follow at Reinbeck City Cemetery with military honors performed by the Reinbeck American Legion. Memorials may be directed to Parkview or to the family to be donated to a cause in memory of Rolly. Abels Funeral And Cremation Service, French-Hand Chapel is taking care of Rolland and his family.

Rolland Howard Hummel was born on October 10, 1935, on the farm near Allison to his parents Harry and Luella (Russler) Hummel. He attended and graduated from Allison High School with the class of 1953. Rolly enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in June of 1954 and served as a rifleman for three years before being discharged in June of 1957 after obtaining the rank of Sergeant (E-5). During his service, Rolland received the National Defense Service Medal and Good Conduct Medal. Rolland was united in marriage to Phyllis Dinsdale on December 10, 1958, at Amity Presbyterian Church. Rolly farmed for several years near Allison before moving to south of Reinbeck where he farmed for a total of 40 years.

Rolland was strong in his faith, family, and farming. He worked hard to tend to the land, caring for his crops and livestock to be able to provide for his family. In his spare time, he enjoyed fishing and working with his horses for a number of years. Rolland was proud of his grandchildren and enjoyed spending time with them and attending their various activities. He also enjoyed spending his time and socializing with the many people of the community. Rolland and Phyllis spent time in Branson, Missouri, yearly, and looked forward to doing so. He was a member of Saint John’s Lutheran Church and the Reinbeck American Legion.

Rolland is survived by his loving wife Phyllis of Reinbeck; children Melissa Jo (Mel) Sweerin of Waterloo, Michael (Rita) Hummel of Conrad, Jennifer (Mike) Schick of Waterloo, and Julie (Mike) Peterson of Reinbeck; grandchildren Jared (Rachel) Sweerin of Palm Harbor, Florida, Nathan (Melanie) Sweerin of Cedar Falls, Nicholas Sweerin of Colombia, Missouri, Sarah (Kyle) Smith of Cedar Rapids, Jacob (Natalie) Hummel of Plymouth, Minnesota, Jordan (Mandy) Schick of Cedar Falls, Tyler (Hayley) Schick of Des Moines, Lydia (Reed) Dinsdale of Des Moines, and Elise, Jed, and Joshua Peterson of Reinbeck; 15 great-grandchildren. Rolly was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Harry, Lewis, Robert, and sister Lorraine.
