Marlys Jean Haverkamp

October 16, 1929 — March 14, 2023

Marlys Jean Haverkamp, 93, of Grundy Center, Iowa, passes away on Tuesday, March 14, 2023 at Creekside Living in Grundy Center. A memorial visitation will be held at the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center, on Saturday, March 18, 2023 from 1:00 p.m. until time of memorial service at 2:00 p.m. Inurnment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Marlys was born on October 16, 1929, in Tripoli, Iowa. She was the loving daughter of Herbert and Evalena (Prestien) Hoppenworth. Marlys was baptized on November 24, 1929, at the Grace (St. John’s) Lutheran Church in Tripoli, Iowa and confirmed on April 2, 1944, at the church. Marlys graduated from Tripoli High School in the class of 1948.

Marlys was united in marriage to Marvin Haverkamp on April 11, 1948, at the Grace Lutheran Church in Tripoli. They lived in Bremer County, Iowa for 20 years and farmed. In 1967, they moved to Grundy Center.

Marlys worked at various jobs but her last one was her “fun job.” It was making people happy handing out samples as a Demo Lady. However, above all, Marlys loved her family. Marlys was a long-time member of the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center. She loved watching the Grundy Center girls’ basketball teams and was their number one fan. She cherished every moment she had with her husband, children, grandchildren, and even great and great-great-grandchildren. Although she lived a long and prosperous life, she will be dearly missed by those she leaves behind.

Marlys is survived by her children, Tim (Shirley) Haverkamp of Tulsa, Oklahoma, Lisa (Brent) Ackart of Cornville, Arizona and Steve Haverkamp of Grundy Center, Iowa; 11 grandchildren; and many great and great-great-grandchildren; and a host of nieces and nephews and great-nieces and nephews. She rejoins in Heaven her parents; husband of 71 years Marvin; daughter Sharon Orr; son Roger Portwine; grandson Tracy Brase; and brothers Kenneth and Eldon Hoppenworth.
