L. George Schildroth

October 1, 1941 — May 30, 2018

L. George Schildroth, 76, of Reinbeck, passed away on Wednesday, May 30, 2018, at UnityPoint Health Allen Memorial Hospital, following a brief illness. Visitation will be held on Monday, June 4th from 5:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the French-Hand Funeral Home in Reinbeck. The funeral service will be held on Tuesday, June 5th at 10:30 AM at the United Methodist Church in Reinbeck, preceded by one hour of visitation at the church. Interment will follow services at the Reinbeck Cemetery. Memorials may be made to the American Cancer Society or to the United Methodist Church in Reinbeck (please note George's name in the memo).

George was born on October 1, 1941, on the family farm in rural Grundy County, to his parents Leonard George & Ruth (Lacour) Schildroth. A lifelong Reinbeck resident, George attended school in Reinbeck, graduating with the class of 1960. After high school, George attended college at Iowa State in Ames, where he studied Farm Operations. After college, George enlisted in the United States Army where he was stationed at Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. He spent the rest of his military career in Georgia, where he was honorably discharged.

After returning home from his time in the military, George continued his farming career alongside his father and his brother Craig.  After many years farming with his brother, he was later joined by his nephews Jason and Tyler.

George was a lifelong farmer, following in the footsteps of his father. He was passionate about agriculture, from the bookkeeping, to the day to day operations, to the appearance of the land. Some would say he was a ‘perfectionist’ at his job, meticulous, steward to the Land.

When George wasn’t busy on the farm, he immensely enjoyed traveling and sightseeing. He loved to travel all over the country and sometimes would find himself driving thousands of miles and ending in places he didn’t expect. In recent years, he bought a condominium in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, a place he loved to visit and to get away from the Iowa winters!

George had lots of family and many good friends and although his passing is difficult to deal with, his time on Earth was well spent and he was an example of what hard work was. He will be dearly missed by all those he leaves behind.

George is survived by his siblings Patricia (Robert) Bown of Hudson, Delores Petersen of Grundy Center, Ruth (Lowell) Trepp, Craig (Marie) Schildroth and Warren (Becky) Schildroth, all of Reinbeck; many nieces, nephews and great-nieces, and nephews; special lifelong friend Bill Newnum. In death, he rejoins his parents and brother-in-law Marvin Petersen.
