Following high school she attended Hamilton Business College in Mason City then worked as a stenographer for the United States Treasury in Washington D.C. John died in May of 1994 and Ruth renewed her friendship with her high school classmate, Merle Lindsey. They were married on August 16, 1997 and they made their home on Merle's farm west of Eldora.

She was a member of the Eldora United Methodist Church where she had been active with the United Methodist Women. She was also a member of Twilight Chapter #59 of the Order of the Eastern Star in Spirit Lake and formerly served as Worthy Matron in the Jefferson Chapter in 1963. She loved music, was an avid reader and expert seamstress, and enjoyed spending time with her family.
