Jean Stephan

Jean (Shoup) Stephan, age 86, of Altoona, IA, formerly of Reinbeck, passed away on Sunday, March 5^th, 2023, at the Taylor Hospice House after a short illness with cancer. A visitation will be held Thursday, March 9, 2023, from 10 a.m. to 11 a.m. at St. Gabriel’s Catholic Church in rural Reinbeck. A Mass of Christian Burial will follow the visitation at 11 a.m. A burial will follow at 12:30 p.m. at Reinbeck Cemetery. Memorials may be directed to the family.

Jean was born August 2, 1936, to Raymond and Grace (Hoepner) Shoup in Waterloo, Iowa. Jean graduated from Reinbeck High School in 1953. She was a part of the 1952 Girl’s State Championship Basketball Team and cherished that memory. Following graduation, she went to Marshalltown Evangelical School of Nursing and obtained her RN. In later years, she graduated from University of North Dakota at Grand Forks, becoming a Family Nurse Practitioner/PA. Jean will be remembered for her years of service to the community in the Reinbeck Clinic with Dr. Verduyn. After retirement, Jean and Bob spent time traveling in their RV and Jean began quilting. She never missed playing cards on Tuesdays with the “girls.” She was a church musician for many years.

Jean married Robert Stephan June 26, 1955, in Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Grundy Center, Iowa. They would have celebrated 68 years of marriage in June. They were blessed with four children: Michael, Rita, Timothy, and Ronald.

Jean spent almost her entire life in Reinbeck and recently moved to Altoona to be near family when she needed more care. Jean cherished her family most of all and made countless quilts for her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren.

Jean will be deeply missed by her husband of 67 years, Bob Stephan.

Jean is preceded in death by her son, Michael Stephan, her parents, Raymond and Grace Shoup, and brother, Jack Shoup.
