Gary Johannsen

Gary A. Johannsen, 69, of Wellsburg, IA, died at his home on Friday, February 22nd, while under his family’s loving care. The memorial service for Gary will be held on Saturday, March 2nd at 11:00 AM at the Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Reinbeck. Visitation will precede the service, beginning at 10:00 AM at the church. Inurnment will take place privately at a later date. Gary was born on July 8, 1949 in Reinbeck, Iowa, the son of Harvey & Marlys (Guelner) Johannsen. He grew up in the Reinbeck area and graduated from Reinbeck High School in the class of 1968.

He worked at mid-equipment, John Deere, and was a traveling welder until he decided to stay home and care for his two daughters. He married Joyce Rounds on June 12, 1992, moving his family to Wellsburg in July of that same year.

Gary enjoyed attending sporting events and helping teach his daughters, until their graduation. He loved the  4th of July and enjoyed displaying fireworks! Gary loved to fish, and he enjoyed that with his brother-in-law at Spirit Lake and hunting every December. Gary liked gardening and canning, especially with his grandson Jayden Nagel. During the summer, Gary enjoyed campfires and mowing with all of his grandchildren. He was a true family man, enjoying all of his time spent with his loved ones; attending family birthday parties and spending time on his brother’s grove.

Gary was a member of the Union Congregational United Church of Christ in Reinbeck.

He is survived by his wife Joyce of Wellsburg; mother Marlys Johannsen of Reinbeck; daughters Lacy Nagel (Kris) and Lisa Johannsen (Gabriel), both of Wellsburg; grandchildren Jayden & Layne Nagel, Klay Bolhuis, Jaxxon Leuch and Laraya Davis, all of Wellsburg; sister-in-law Barb Johannsen. Gary was preceded in death by his father Harvey; brothers Galen & Gordon Johannsen.
