Evelyn "Evie" Haupt, a cherished member of the Wellsburg community, passed away peacefully on May 17, 2026, at UnityPoint Health - Taylor House in Des Moines, Iowa. Born on July 4, 1948, to John (Jennie Krosschell) Olthoff, in Chicago, Illinois, Evie’s life was marked by dedication, creativity, and an unwavering commitment to those around her.
Evie’s educational journey began with her graduation from Chicago Christian High School in 1965. She pursued higher education with a passion for learning and teaching, earning a two-year degree from Trinity Christian College before completing her four-year degree in Education at Dordt College in 1969. Her career started as a beloved teacher at Timothy Christian School in Wellsburg, where she taught Kindergarten through second grade for four years. It was during this time that she met the love of her life, Wally Haupt. Their union was celebrated on June 15, 1973, at First Christian Reformed Church in Wellsburg, a place that would also hold significant importance in honoring her memory.
After marriage, Evie devoted much of her time and energy to nurturing her family. In the early 2000s, she opened the Brick Bungalow in Wellsburg, further establishing herself as a vital part of the local community. Renowned for her creativity and kindness, Evie was not only a hard worker but a true dreamer with visions that extended far beyond the ordinary. Those who knew her often described her as “one of a kind,” a testament to her unique spirit and determination, even when a touch of stubbornness showed through.
Her generosity extended well beyond her family and career. Evie’s devotion to service was evident through her active participation on numerous boards and committees within her community. Among her proudest accomplishments was her leadership in fundraising and volunteering to build an all-inclusive playground—a remarkable achievement that brought joy and accessibility to a small town, reflecting her compassionate heart and unwavering dedication.
Evie’s warmth was further exemplified in her love of baking and family. Fondly known as “Cookie Grandma,” to her grandchildren. She delighted in making a variety of cookies and for many occasions and events in the community. These simple joys were emblematic of the caring and nurturing woman she was throughout her life.
Family, friends, and the community are invited to honor Evie’s life at the visitation held on May 26, 2026, from 4:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., followed by a memorial service on May 27, 2026, beginning at 10:30 a.m., both taking place at First Christian Reformed Church, 12419 185th Street, Wellsburg, Iowa.
