Duane Murra

Duane Dennis Murra, 71, passed away on Thursday, May 14th at his home in Wellsburg, following a brief illness, while under the care of UnityPoint Hospice. A private graveside service will take place at the Wellsburg Reformed Church Cemetery. No public services will be held. Memories and messages of condolence are strongly encouraged and may be left at www.abelsfuneralhomes.com In lieu of flowers, memorials may be given to the American Cancer Society, in Duane’s name.

Duane was born on August 16, 1948, on the family farm in Grundy County, Iowa. He attended school in Wellsburg, graduating with the class of 1966. On June 13, 1969, Duane married the love of his life, Rebecca Geerdes in Wellsburg. Together, the couple welcomed son Andrew, and daughter Belynda. Duane began his career at Fischer Controls in Marshalltown and retired after 30 plus years. He also farmed, continuing his family’s legacy. In Duane’s later years, he moved to Minnesota to work alongside his son Andrew, in his construction business.

When Duane was not busy working, he enjoyed fishing on his boat, golfing and camping with his family. He also enjoyed watching old western movies and he was an avid Iowa Hawkeye Fan (Go Hawks!), watching as many of their sporting events as possible. Duane was a family man; he enjoyed watching his grandsons’ sports and spending time with his loved ones. He was a very selfless and giving man, helping his family out when they needed him and helping his neighbors when he could.

Duane was a member of the Wellsburg Reformed Church, where he enjoyed singing in the church choir. He also served in several positions on the consistory and many other groups within the church. He also enjoyed singing in various other groups. His 71 years were blessed, and he will be missed by all those he leaves behind.

He is survived by his son Andrew Murra of Howell, MI and daughter Belynda (Turner) Bennett of Shakopee, MN; grandsons Jacob (Miranda) Bennett of Belle Plaine, MN and Kaleb Bennett of Shakopee, MN; brother Clarence Murra of Wellsburg; brothers-in-law Royce Tack of Osage, IA and Verle Bohlen of Wellsburg. He rejoins in Heaven his parents; beloved wife Rebecca; infant daughter Amanda; sisters Norma Tack and Marlys Bohlen; sister-in-law Harriet Murra.
