Carol Mae Bown was born May 3rd, 1935, in Davenport, Iowa to Albin and Esther Holmstrom. She grew up and attended school in Hazelton, Iowa graduating in 1952. After high school she attended Upper Iowa University obtaining a two-year degree in teaching. Following graduation, she took a teaching position with the Reinbeck School system. It was in Reinbeck where she met her future husband, Donald. The two were united in marriage on June 10th, 1956, in Hazelton. To this union one son, LaVerne was born.

After teaching for 15 years, she took a job at a local retailer and then became the City Clerk for Reinbeck, retiring after 22 years of service.

Carol was an active member of the community participating in many local organizations.  She was a 50-year member of the Coinette Chapter, Order of the Eastern Star, where she held numerous offices and was a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. She was a member of the First United Presbyterian Church of Reinbeck holding several positions within the church and taught the preschool Sunday school class for many years. Carol was a sports fan supporting her son throughout high school and attending Iowa State football games. She also enjoyed traveling, whether to Branson, Missouri or to Sidney, Nebraska to visit her grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoyed reading, doing word find puzzles, watching any sport on TV and visiting with friends. 

She is survived by her son LaVerne and his wife Betsy of Sidney, Nebraska. Three granddaughters, Lacey (Stephen) Miller and Erin Bown of Kearney, Nebraska, Amanda (Andy) Leider of Alliance, Nebraska, two great-grandsons, Kaden and Landon Miller of Kearney, Nebraska. One sister, Norma Jean Coffelt of Denver, Colorado, and numerous extended family members.

She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Don, brothers-in-law, Thomas Coffelt, Eugene and Richard Bown and sister-in-law Mary Ann Hempen.

Visitation will be held Friday, February 17th from 4:00-6:00 pm at Abels Funeral and Cremation Service in Reinbeck.   Services will be held Saturday, February 18th at 10:30 am at the First United Presbyterian Church, Reinbeck. Carol will be laid to rest in the Reinbeck City Cemetery. Everyone is invited to join the family at a church for a time to reflect and food.
