Calvin Heard

March 7, 1925 — October 5, 2005

Calvin James "Jim" Heard, 80, of Steamboat Rock, Iowa, died from natural causes on Wednesday, October 5, 2005, at his home in Steamboat Rock, IA while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Funeral services will be at 1:30 PM, Monday, October 10 at the First Baptist Church of Steamboat Rock with Pastor Bruce Baillie of the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock officiating. Burial will follow at the Steamboat Rock Cemetery with full military honors provided by Hoover-Eiserman Post 542 of the American Legion. Visitation is from 4:00 to 8:00 PM on Sunday at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 to 8:00 PM. Memorials may be directed to the family.



Born March 7, 1925, in Tracy, Minnesota, Jim was the 13th child and 8th son of Roland and Ella (Bowers) Heard. He graduated from Owasa High School in 1943, and entered the United States Army Air Corp shortly after graduation. He served in England during WWII as a ball turret gunner on a B17-G. He was a proud member of the 351st Bomb Group of the 8th Army Air Corps. He returned home to Owasa in 1945 after serving as a drill sergeant in Texas and then worked at the train depot before he went into farming with his older brother, Rex. On December 9, 1950 he was united in marriage to Jane Klemme in Hubbard. He later worked as a chauffeur, a service station attendant at Orv's Phillips 66, an electronics technician with Pine Lake A.V. Service, and then worked as a janitor at Eldora-New Providence Elementary School until his retirement in March of 1990.



Jim was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Steamboat Rock where he served as a trustee, and a member of the Hoover-Eiserman Post 542 of the American Legion. He was active in sports in his younger years, learned to play golf after he retired, loved to hunt and fish, built and flew remote controlled airplanes, and was a proud family man who loved to do projects with his ten children.



Surviving is Jim's wife of 54 years, Jane; children, Jonathan Heard of Phoenix, AZ, Susan Heard of Chula Vista, CA, Mary Sapp of Waco, GA, Tony (Brenda) Heard of Wichita, KS, Penny (Brian) Hall of Shellsburg, IA, Randy (Glenda) Heard of Spring Valley, CA, Elizabeth Heard of Milwaukee, OR, Calvin (Mary Leigh) Heard of Fortson, GA, Holly Heard of Des Moines, IA, and August (Stephanie) Heard of Wichita, KS; sister, Elizabeth Jacobson of Windom, MN; and by 15 grandchildren and 4 great-grandchildren. Preceding him in death are his parents; brothers, Raymond, William, Donald, Carroll, Ted, Claude, and Rex; sisters, Catherine Heard, Joy Huzl, Gladys Mounter, and Dolly Stonebraker; and son-in-law, Doug Sapp.
