Bruce Altenhein

May 9, 1939 — September 30, 2025

Conrad

Bruce Altenhein, 86, of Conrad, Iowa, passed away Tuesday, September 30, 2025, at his residence surrounded by his family. A private graveside service will take place. A celebration of life will be held on Saturday, October 25, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at the Oakwood Golf Course in Conrad. If you wish to share a story we would love those attending the celebration of life to bring a written story of how Bruce affected their life from teaching, coaching or life in general for the family to read at a later time. In lieu of flowers donations can be made in his name with a direct donation to Iowa River Hospice, or sent to the family for a BCLUW scholarship fund to be established.

Bruce was born May 9, 1939, in Traer, Iowa, to Paul and Gertrude (Yohn) Altenhein. He graduated from Traer High School in 1957, and went on to further his education at Iowa State Teachers College (now the University of Northern Iowa). In 1961, he began his teaching career at Beaman-Conrad High School, where he served as a math teacher, wrestling coach, athletic director, and girls’ track coach. Bruce also started the school’s computer programming courses. He also worked for Stone Sanitation prior to retiring from teaching until his “official retirement” in 2020.

Bruce married Carol Parker on September 3, 1965. Together they made their home in Conrad for over 60 years with over 57 of those years at their present home, where Bruce took great pride in his garden, flowers, and the many pets—and assortment of other animals—that were part of their lives. Other interests included talking about wrestling, gardening, wrestling, working, wrestling and watching math videos. Was wrestling mentioned? Along with that included reminiscing (talking) with former students and athletes, sharing stories and connections that spanned generations.

They raised three children: Shannon (John Heffernan) of Cleveland, Ohio, Heather of Ankeny, Iowa, and Courtney (Gregg Hinders) of Huxley, Iowa. He was a proud grandfather to Logan (Molly) Brandt, Colin (Elaine) Heffernan, Carter Brandt, and Brenna Heffernan, and he cherished his role as great-grandfather to Alyson Brandt and Finnegan Heffernan.

He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister. He is survived by his wife, daughters, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren, all of whom brought him great joy.
