Al was born on March 6, 1937, in rural Grundy Center, Iowa, to his parents Fred and Lena (Casjens) Harberts. He was a life-long resident of Grundy Center and graduated from Grundy Center High School in the class of 1957. Al served his country in the United States Army overseas in Germany from 1957 until 1961. Upon his honorable discharge from the Army, Al returned home to Iowa and began his career as a surveyor for the Iowa DOT. He then drove truck for 57 years for several companies and for local farmers, and retired from the Grundy Center Co-Op. Al was united in marriage to his wife Beryl Thede on August 6, 1966. Together they welcomed four children into their family.
Al was a long-time member of the First Presbyterian Church in Grundy Center. He was a member of the church group known as the Mariner’s and he also served the church as a Deacon. Al was a member of the Grundy Center American Legion Post 349. He loved all things Iowa Hawkeyes, Grundy Center, and UNI Panthers sports. He also enjoyed stock car racing. Al was extremely proud to be inducted into the Grundy Center High School Athletics Hall of Fame in 2007 for his 50-year record in the Mile Run. However, Al’s true joy in life came from spending time with his family, especially supporting his grandchildren at their sporting events.
Al is survived by his children Chad Harberts, David Harberts (Heather Randall), Ellen (Mike) Mesch, and Ferren (Jerod) Sadler; grandchildren Tayler, Errin, Jordan, Jarrett, Brynn, Colton, Meleah, Greysen, and Jace; six great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews.
