Alan was born on April 8, 1961, to Gary and Marlys (Podhajsky) in Grundy Center, Iowa. He was raised on the family farm near Hudson, Iowa where he graduated from Reinbeck High School in 1979. After high school, Alan attended Iowa State University, obtaining a Bachelor of Science Degree in Farm Operations graduating in December of 1983. Alan met Sarah Houtman, in Kalamazoo, Michigan where he was working for Asgrow Seed Company. They were married on June 9, 1990, in Kalamazoo.
In the fall of 1992, Alan joined his father and uncle in their farm operation. Alan and Sarah built a beautiful life together on the farm along with their two boys. They found fulfillment in serving God and family amid God’s beautiful creation --Iowa’s Heartland. One of the evidences of this creation was the many sunset photos that Alan shared with friends and family. He claimed that they rival any in the world. Those who knew Alan knew that he absolutely loved farming, he considered it his hobby as well as his occupation. He faithfully served on many financial, church and agricultural boards.
Alan planned many family vacations to walk along tropical beaches, explore and spend time on the water fishing. Together, Alan and Sarah hosted numerous friends & family around the kitchen counter or on the back deck at what he lovingly referred to as the “Hicks Diner” -serving the best steak dinners in the Cedar Valley.
Alan will be missed by his wife, Sarah (Houtman) of 35 years, two children; Kyle Karkosh of Waterloo, Shane (Maddie) Karkosh of Hudson, Iowa, one grandchild; Sullivan, two brothers and their families; Brian Karkosh of Traer, Iowa and Kedric Karkosh (Robin) of Vinemont, Alabama, Uncle Jared and Aunt Kathryn Owen who shared in the farm operation, and many other aunts and uncles and cousins, along with Sarah’s Dad, and her siblings and their families. Alan is predeceased by his parents, Gary and Marlys Karkosh, and mother-in-law, Shirley Houtman
The family requests that in lieu of flowers memorial funds be contributed to Creole Inc., or Preborn.
