Alvertis “Pete” Kirby, 87, of Lincoln, IA, passed away at his home on February 16, 2018. A funeral service will be held Thursday, February 22, 2018 at Salem Church of Lincoln at 10:30 AM in Lincoln, IA, with Pastor Barbara Muhs officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service starting at 9:00 AM. Burial will follow the service. Memorials may be directed to the family or Alzheimers. French-Hand Funeral Home is caring for Pete and his family.
Alvertis “Pete” Lennis Kirby was born on November 30, 1930 to his parents Leslie and Florence (Howard) Kirby in Moulton, IA. Pete attended Moulton High School, graduating with the class of 1948. Pete served his country honorably enlisting in the United States Army and serving during the Korean War. Pete moved to Waterloo in 1955 and started working at John Deere in 1958. Pete worked in the foundry for 20 years and later as a janitor for 13, working for John Deere for 33 years. Pete was united in marriage to Helen Ann Wood on March 30, 1963 in Milan, IL. Pete taught Sunday school for 20 years teaching at both Westlien Church and Sunnyside Church where he taught 4 year olds. Pete moved to LaHarpe, IL in 1991 to be closer to his family, later moving back to Reinbeck in 2005, and settling in Lincoln. Pete enjoyed taking his children on bus rides, going bowling, and out to the movies. Pete and Helen both enjoyed playing cards with their many friends. Pete was a member of Salem Church of Lincoln and was a man devoted to his faith.
Pete is survived by his wife Helen Kirby; children Nancy (Bob) Heise of Gladbrook, Curtis Kirby of Lincoln; grandchildren Rob and Allen Heise; brothers Delbert (Margot) Kirby of Indianola and Larry (Dorothy) Kirby of Moulton; Aunt Maxine who is 103 yrs. old of Winterset; Pete is also survived by many nieces, nephews, and cousins. Pete is preceded in death by his parents, brother Jerry Kirby, sisters Dode Lamb, Erna Boss, Jean Spurgeon, and Iris McNamer
