William Vigars

August 18, 1918 — June 30, 2007

William H. "Bill" Vigars, 88, of Eldora, Iowa, died Saturday, June 30, 2007, at Mary Greeley Medical Center in Ames, Iowa. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, July 3, 2007, at the United Methodist Church in Eldora, Iowa, with Pastor James Key officiating. Burial will follow at the Eldora City Cemetery, with full military rites provided by the Walter-Sayer Post 182 of the American Legion and Roll-Harless Post 3974 of the VFW.

Visitation will be Monday, July 2, 2007 from 5:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora, with the family present to greet friends the entire time. A memorial fund has been established.

William H. "Bill" Vigars was born August 18, 1918, at home on the farm in rural Hardin County, the son of William Chester and Blanche "Bea" Marie (Holleid) Vigars. Bill received his education in Eldora, graduating from the Eldora High School in 1935. On January 13, 1942, Bill entered the United States Air Force, serving his country during World War II, until he was honorably discharged in November 1945. In March 1948, Bill was united in marriage to Geneva Williams at the First United Methodist Church in Eldora. Geneva died in September 1952. On May 25, 1957, Bill was united in marriage to Leona Boelman at the Presbyterian Church in Aplington, Iowa. After their marriage, they made their home on the farm in rural Eldora. Bill was a lifelong farmer. In 1980, Bill and Leona moved off of the farm and into Eldora. He retired from farming in 1981, but still enjoyed helping on the farm, wherever he was needed. Bill was a member of First United Methodist Church in Eldora; the Eldora Kiwanis Club, the Hardin County Historical Society, the Walter-Sayer Post #182 of the American Legion, the Pine Lake Housing Board, and was the CEO of the Turnabout Shop. Bill enjoyed bowling, horseshoe pitching, gardening, and playing bridge.

He is survived by his wife Leona Vigars of Eldora, Iowa; two sons Byram Vigars and his wife Donna of New Auburn, Wisconsin; Jim Vigars and his wife Linda of Goodyear, Arizona; one daughter Becky Vigars and her husband Jim Payne of Boulder Creek, California; four grandchildren-Mike Vigars and his wife Amy; Shelley Miller and her husband Jim; Amy Vigars and Neil Vigars; four great-grandchildren-Katelynn and Adam Vigars, and Scott and Brooke Miller; and one sister Dorothy Pardun of Roseville, Minnesota.

He was preceded in death by his parents-Chester and Bea Vigars; his first wife Geneva; one brother-in-law John Pardun; and one niece Peggy (Pardun) Hanson.
