Richard Stone

April 20, 1933 — November 14, 2007

Richard (Dick) E. Stone, died Wednesday, November 14, 2007 at Ellsworth Memorial Hospital in Iowa Falls, Iowa following a long but courageous struggle resulting from several strokes and finally phenomena. Funeral services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, November 17, 2007 at St. Mary's Catholic Church, 614 Washington Street in Eldora, Iowa. Visitations will be held from 9:00 am to 10:00 am on November 17th at St. Mary's prior to mass with Father Paul Baldwin officiating. Interment will be at St. Mary's Catholic Cemetery in Eldora with a reception following at St. Mary's. Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora is in charge of the arrangements.



Dick was born on April 20, 1933 in Ottoson, Iowa to Lucille Alma Stone (Knutson) and Percival Evertt Stone. He married Evelyn (Evie) Mary Barbara Dierkhising on November 3, 1956 in Arlington, Minnesota and lived in Eldora for the next 51 years. On April 20, 1933, Dick was baptized and, on August 30, 1948, was confirmed at the First Lutheran Church in Algona, Iowa. The Stone family moved to Eldora on August 1, 1948. Dick graduated with the Class of 52 from Eldora High School. While in high school, he participated in football, basketball and excelled in track and field achieving several awards and setting longtime records in the 440-yard dash competition.



On September 16, 1952 to August 23, 1956, Dick served in the U.S. Air Force stationed in Korea and Japan. In addition, he continued his military commitment by participating in the Air Force Reserves from 1956 to 1960. From his return to the States until the death of his parents, he was a master electrician at Stone Electric. On April 13, 1997, Dick became the owner of Stone Electric, which he faithfully managed six days a week until his demise.



Among his most favorite past-times, Dick dedicated much time and talent to the Friends of Pine Lake, Pine Lake Country Club and served on the Board of Directors of the Hardin County Pioneer Cemetery Commission. In addition, he generously contributed his time, talents and in-kind services to the American Legion Club of Eldora. He possessed skills and aptitude in woodworking, gardening and genealogy; enjoyed playing golf frequenting numerous golf clubs in Iowa and other states with his wife, Evie, and friends. Until recently, he was active in fishing, hunting and restoring of Studebaker automobiles, tinkering with electronics and other gadgetry, spending time with his seven nieces and nephews and their eleven children and Kevin, Ben and Brian, Chris and Charlie Geer's sons.



Dick was preceded in death by his wife, Evie, mother and father, Lucile and PE Stone, and sister, Donna May Dunn. He is survived by his younger brother William [Bill] (wife Tari and daughter Andrea and son Brian) Stone, of Anoka, Iowa; nieces Tammy and nephew Jeff Savage; nieces Gwen Goduto (husband Tom and sons Connor and Cole) of Bellevue, Nebraska; Heather Cardin (husband Greg and daughter, Amanda, and son Alex); Tariann Aurora (daughter Cassandra and son Jamison); nephews Tracy (wife Diane and daughters Madison, Alisa and Morgan), William [Billy] and wife Stephanie, Trevor (Toni, significant other and sons Tyler and Jacob) and Todd Dierkhising, all of Omaha, Nebraska; cousin Charles and wife Chris Geer and sons Kevin, Ben and Brian of Rochester, Minnesota; and sister-in-law and brother-in-law, Judy and Dirk Dierkhising of Anchorage, Alaska.
