Nellie M. Smith, 88, of Eldora, died from natural causes on Thursday, May 21, 2009 at the Ellsworth Memorial Hospital in Iowa Falls while under the care of Hospice of North Iowa. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, May 26 at the Eldora United Methodist Church with Pastor Fred Berry officiating. Burial will follow in Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Eldora. Visitation is from 5pm to 7pm on Monday at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. Memorials may be directed Hospice of North Iowa.






Nellie was born February 8, 1921 in Plainfield , Iowa , daughter of Perry and Daisy Mae (Shipp) Wilson. She attended Waverly High School and was married to John E. McCarty in 1938. To this union were born two daughters, Loretta and Nellie Irene. John was killed in a work related accident in 1941 and on August 22, 1947 Nellie was united in marriage to Wayne Smith at the Little Brown Church of Nashua. To this union were born three children, Corliss, Curtis and Greg. She had worked for several retail stores including Andrle and Creps Furniture Store, Leutholds Clothiers, and Karol Ann’s Clothing.





Nellie was baptized in the Eldora Baptist Church by her cousin Reverend Gordon Shipp and was a member of the VFW Auxiliary. She enjoyed raising and cooking for her family, and they have many fond memories of her pies and potato salad. She also enjoyed working crossword puzzles and reading.





She is survived by her husband, Wayne; daughters, Loretta Rieks of Hubbard, Nellie Irene Arnold of Burlington, and Corliss Vinton of Eldora; sons, Curtis (Linda) Smith of Marshalltown and Greg Smith of Eldora; sisters, Margaret Bolton of Waverly and Mary Ellen (Robert) Smith of Buffalo Creek, Colorado; and by six grandchildren and four great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her first husband; sisters, Lenore Beuhrer and Elnore Walther;  brothers, Richard Wilson and Galen Wilson; and son-in-law, Eugene Rieks.
