Mildred Schiller

April 3, 1930 — September 25, 2010

Mildred J. Schiller, 80, of Grundy Center, Iowa, died from natural causes on Saturday, September 25, 2010 at the Grundy Care Center in Grundy Center. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, September 28, 2010 at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center with Pastor Beth Olson of the American Lutheran Church officiating. Burial will follow in Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center. Visitation is at the funeral home on Monday from 5 pm to 8 pm. Memorials may be directed to Mildred’s family.


Mildred was born April 3, 1930 in Grundy County, daughter of James T. and Ilene R. (Dietrich) Wheeler. She attended country school through the 3 rd grade, Grundy Center Schools through the 8 th grade, then Delhi School through the 11 th grade while living with an aunt. She graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1948. Mildred was united in marriage to Herman Schiller on September 29, 1948. They made their home in Dike for 3 years and then moved to Grundy Center where she currently resided with her daughter, Karen Simms.


She worked several jobs cleaning and as a store clerk, but the majority of her career as head-housekeeper and activity director for the Grundy Care Center where she was employed for 24 years. After retirement Mildred worked in the Deli of Family Foods in Grundy Center for 8 years.


When Mildred’s health still allowed she enjoyed gardening, reading, embroidering, and sewing making many of her daughter’s clothing. She was a long time member of the American Lutheran Church.


Surviving is her daughter, Karen Simms of Grundy Center; grandsons, Edward (Alishia) Stoakes of Traer and Jay Stoakes of Holland; son-in-law, Virgil Stoakes of Traer; sisters-in-law, Rita Schiller of Cedar Falls, Leona Schiller of Reinbeck, Lil Schiller of Grundy Center, and Mary Schiller of Waterloo; brothers-in-law, Leon Farris of Belton, TX and Harry Schiller of Grundy Center; and by several nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Herman on January 26, 2008; daughter, Dianne Stoakes; infant daughter, Shirlee Ann Schiller; sisters, Donna Warner and Bernice Ferris; and brother, Richard Wheeler.
