Melvin Tack

Melvin Henry Tack, 97 of Grundy Center, Iowa passed away Friday, September 3, 2010 at the Grundy Care Center while under the care of Cedar Valley Hospice. Funeral Services will be 10:30 a.m. on Monday September 6, 2010 at the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center with Pastor Beth Olson officiating. Burial will follow at Holland Cemetery in Holland, Iowa. Visitation will be Sunday, September 5, 2010 from 4:30 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Cedar Valley Hospice 310 E Avenue Grundy Center, Iowa 50638.


Melvin Henry Tack was born November 27, 1912, north of Wellsburg, Iowa to his parents Richard and Etta Lindeman Tack. Melvin attended rural school in German Township. He graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1933. Melvin was united in marriage to Jeanette Riekena on March 12, 1936 at the parsonage of St. Peter’s Evangelical and Reformed Church, northwest of Wellsburg. He began married life driving a truck, picking up milk and cream for Swift and Company out of the Iowa Falls plant. Melvin began farming in 1941, north of Wellsburg in Grundy County, later farming by Grundy Center and Holland until retiring and moving to Grundy Center in 1980. After his retirement from farming, Melvin spent a number of years driving a truck for local grain haulers. Melvin was a member of the American Lutheran Church in Grundy Center for over 50 years. He was a resident of the Grundy Care Center since September of 2008. Melvin always enjoyed visiting with family and friends.


Melvin is survived by his sons Royce (Norma) Tack of Osage, IA, Dennis (Linda) Tack of Hollister, MO and Leland (Wendy) Tack of Johnston, IA; his nine grandchildren, twenty-three great-grandchildren one great-great granddaughter and one step great-great granddaughter; his brother Kenneth (Beulah) Tack of Wellsburg, IA. He is preceded in death by his wife Jeanette; his parents; his brothers Harvey, Lawrence and Dale Tack; and his great-granddaughter Megan Schmit.
