Melissa R. Engelkes, 48, of Wellsburg, Iowa, died Monday, September 13, 2004, at Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo, Iowa, of natural causes. Funeral services will be 1:30 P.M., Thursday, September 16, 2004, at Wellsburg Reformed Church in Wellsburg, Iowa. Burial will follow at Hazelgreen Cemetery, rural Ackley, Iowa. Visitation will be Wednesday, September 15, 2004, from

4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., at Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg, Iowa. Visitation will also be Thursday morning from 9:00 A.M. to 11:00 A.M. at the funeral home. The family will be present on Wednesday evening at the funeral home to greet friends. A memorial fund has been established.



Melissa was born March 25, 1956, in Grundy Center, Iowa, the daughter of Donald and Louise (Schmidt) Ross. She received her education in the Wellsburg School System and graduated from Wellsburg High School in 1974. On July 26, 1974, Melissa was united in marriage to Eugene Engelkes at the Wellsburg Reformed Church. After their marriage, they farmed outside of Wellsburg for twelve years. In 1986, they moved to Wellsburg. Melissa sold Home Interiors and Gifts for sixteen years, and did so until 1994, when she had to quit due to health reasons.

Melissa was a lifelong member of Wellsburg Reformed Church. Had been a past board member of the Wellsburg Community Club, and she was also a member of the Smokey Ridge Muzzleloaders. She loved to golf and to camp.

She is survived by her husband Eugene ?Gene? Engelkes of Wellsburg, Iowa, two sons Bret Engelkes and his wife Daniela of Maurice, Iowa; David Engelkes of Wellsburg, Iowa; two daughters Kelly Jean Engelkes of Marion, Indiana; Lindsey Engelkes of Orange City, Iowa; her mother Louise Ross of Wellsburg, Iowa; two brothers Ron Ross and his wife Kathy of Grundy Center, Iowa; Bill Ross and his wife Claudia of Des Moines, Iowa; and one sister Ioleta Blakely of Council Bluffs, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her father Donald Ross.
