Mavis Whitmire

November 27, 1922 — September 23, 2006

Mavis J. Whitmire, 83, of Allison, Iowa, formerly Grundy Center and Fort Madison, died from natural causes on Saturday, September 23, 2006 at the Allison Health Care Center in Allison. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Tuesday, September 26, at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center with Pastor Matt Miller of the Grundy Center First United Methodist Church officiating. Burial will follow in Fifteen Mile Cemetery also known as Lincoln Township Cemetery (Tama County). Visitation will be on Monday from 5pm to 7 pm at Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home.



Mavis was born November 27, 1922 in Marshalltown, Iowa, daughter of Charlie Franklin and Faeh Viola (Rhinesmith) Whitmire. She was raised in Grundy and Tama Counties attending Lincoln Township #9 through the eighth grade. She graduated from Grundy Center High School in 1940 then attended the Iowa State Teacher's College in Cedar Falls for two years. Mavis taught in rural schools in Grundy and Tama Counties from 1942 to 1946, then taught primary grades at Halfa from 1946 to 1949. She completed her BA at UNI in 1951 then taught high school in Kensett, Chelsea, Dunkerton, Klemme, and Williamsburg. In 1965 Mavis received her Masters Degree from the University of Denver. She served as school librarian at the Fort Madison High School and Jr. High Schools from 1964 until her retirement in 1985.



She was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Fort Madison, the Iowa State Education Association, National Education Association, NEAR, IRSPA, American Association of University Women, Business Professional Women, BPW, Delta Kappa Gamma, and the American Association of Retired Persons.



She was preceded in death by her parents and survived by brothers, Gerald C. Whitmire of Parkersburg and Merle R (Delilah) Whitmire of Wellsburg; and by 7nieces and nephews, 26 great nieces and nephews, and 15 great-great nieces and nephews.
