Marlyn Meyer

Marlyn D. Meyer, 85, of Cedar Falls, and formerly of Wellsburg, died Thursday, January 19, 2017 at McAllen Medical Center in McAllen, Texas. A funeral service will be held at 10:30 a.m. on Friday, January 27, 2017 at the Wellsburg Reformed Church with Pastors Mark Andersen and Todd Rempe officiating. Burial will follow in the Wellsburg Reformed Church Cemetery. A visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. on Thursday, January 26, 2017 at the Wellsburg Reformed Church and also 1 hour prior to services on Friday at the church. Doyen-Abels Funeral Home is caring for Marlyn and his family.

Marlyn Dale Meyer, son of Harm and Rachel (Meyer) Meyer was born on August 7, 1931 in rural Holland, Iowa. He received his education in country school thru the 6th grade and then attended Wellsburg School where he graduated in 1950. In 1950, he married Joan Abbas. To this union four children were born, Marva, Susan, Myles and Shelly. The couple later divorced. On March 15, 1974 Marlyn married Irene Walters. The couple resided on a farm near Wellsburg. Irene died on March 4, 2004. Marlyn farmed in the Wellsburg area and also founded M.D. Meyer Seed Farm in 1981. He retired from farming and M.D. Meyer Seed Farm in 1994. On November 5, 2012 he married LaVonne Eilderts. The couple resided on a farm near Wellsburg until moving to Cedar Falls in 2013. Marlyn enjoyed raising haflinger horses, gardening and a love of flowers, birds and trees. He also had many friends in the Amish community.

Survivors include his loving wife, LaVonne Eilderts of Cedar falls, IA; four children, Marva (Mike) Stephenson of Wellsburg, IA, Susan Aytes of Orange, TX, Myles (Julie) Meyer of Wellsburg, IA, Shelly Doyle of Grundy Center, IA; three step children, Daryl (Vikki) Walters of Holland, IA, Brian (Lisa) Eilderts of Omaha, NE, Natalie (Shawn) Kracht of Grundy Center, IA; four grandchildren, Clint (Sasha) Stephenson, Corey (Lindsey) Stephenson, Dawn (Derek) Kruger, Josh (Briget) Meyer and Kary Doyle; four step grandchildren, Austin Appel, Kaylie Appel, Emerson Kracht and Brianna Eilderts; nine great grandchildren; sister, Viola Peters of Grundy Center, IA; and many nieces and nephews. Marlyn is also survived by his two special families, the Limas and the Chappas of Edinburg, TX.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his brother, John Meyer; sisters, Mathilda Rassmusson and Arvilla Freese; and his sons-in-law, Darrell Owens and David Aytes; and his granddaughter, Mandy Dolbear.

Memorials may be directed to the family to be used to maintain the evergreen hedge in the church cemetery.
