Mabel Weichers

December 27, 1916 — April 17, 2007

Mabel Weichers, 90, of Wellsburg, Iowa, died Tuesday, April 17, 2007, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital-Long Term Care Unit in Grundy Center. Funeral services will be 10:00 A.M., Saturday, April 21, 2007, at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, rural Wellsburg, Iowa, with Pastor Gary Burkhalter officiating. Burial will follow at the church cemetery. Visitation will be Friday, April 20, 2007, from 4:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., with the family present to greet friends from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M., at Doyen-Abels Funeral Home in Wellsburg. A memorial fund has been established.

Mabel (Maas) Weichers was born December 27, 1916, at home in rural Wellsburg, Iowa, the daughter of Harry and Sara (Olthoff) Maas. Mabel attended rural country school and then attended Wellsburg High School. On August 17, 1934, Mabel was united in marriage to Conrad Weichers at St. Paul's Lutheran Church, rural Wellsburg. After their marriage, they lived in Cleves, Iowa, for a couple of years, and then made their home in Wellsburg. Following the death of her husband Conrad in January 1965, Mabel began working as an in-home caregiver in Wellsburg. She then became a nurses' aide, working at Valley View Nursing Home in Eldora until her retirement.

Mabel was a lifelong member of St. Paul's Lutheran Church. She enjoyed gardening and loved being with her family. Her strength, wisdom, and compassion will be greatly missed by all those who knew her.

She is survived by one daughter Beverly Kay (Mrs. Lavern) Van Heiden of Wellsburg, Iowa; one son Clifford Weichers and his wife Judy of Moses Lake, Washington; eight grandchildren; nine great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; one daughter-in-law Evelyn Weichers of Palm Springs, California; two sisters Wyone (Mrs. Willard) Ross of Wellsburg, Iowa; and Harriett Burns of Steamboat Rock, Iowa.

She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband Conrad; one son Donald Weichers; one granddaughter Stacey Van Heiden; one daughter-in-law Norma (Sents) Weichers; four sisters- Mary Schmidt, Florence Tjaden, Lillian Cervetti, Jenni Etjen; and one brother Henry Maas.
