Larry Kiehne

June 27, 1940 — November 18, 2006

Larry Kiehne was born on June 27, 1940 in Decorah, IA, son of Reuben and Norma (Todd) Kiehne. He was raised and attended school in Harmony, MN. After high school, Larry enlisted in the U.S. Army where he served in the Airborne Special Forces. When Larry had finished serving his country, he returned home to work with his parents on the family farm near Harmony, MN. It was here that Larry?s life-long love of horses came from. While on a trip to Rochester, MN, Larry met Nancy Rheuport, and on December 2, 1967, they were united in marriage in Rochester. In 1969, Larry traveled to Nebraska where he attended school for horseshoeing. In 1972, Larry and Nancy moved with their family to Reinbeck, IA. Although, Larry worked for area farmers, he was most active as a farrier, having clients throughout Iowa and Minnesota. Larry attended Hawkeye Technical College in the late 1970?s studying Animal Science. He worked for many years with the Hudson Veterinary Clinic at the Waverly Sale Barn. Larry enjoyed taking along the grandkids to the Tuesday sales each week.
Larry was a member of the United Methodist Church in Reinbeck, Coin Lodge #394 and was currently serving as Grand Sword Bearer of the Grand Commandry Knights Templar of Iowa. Larry had served as director for the Iowa Cutting Horse Association. He enjoyed his mornings at the Corner CafAC. in Reinbeck. Larry especially loved his time with his grandchildren. Being the metal worker he was, Larry began to work with the left-over and used horseshoes and nails, turning them into, not only useful items, but intricate pieces of art.
Surviving relatives include his wife, Nancy Kiehne of Reinbeck; one son, Lonn (Jody) Kiehne of Des Moines, IA; two daughters, Lisa (Steve) Swanson of Waterloo, IA, Sheila Kiehne of Huntsville, AL; one sister, Judy (Doug) Godwin of Dlton, MN; three brothers, Fritz (Monie) Kiehne of Onalaska, WI, David (Diane) Kiehne of Harmony, MN, Neal (Mary) Kiehne of Etna, WY; one cousin, Priscilla Gizinski of Grand Island, NE; four grandchildren, Andrew Kiehne, Wyatt and Megan Swanson, Ethan Kiehne.
Larry was preceded in death by his parents.
