John Eller

September 25, 1919 — August 8, 2005

John E. Eller, 85, of Eldora, died from natural causes on Monday, August 8, 2005 at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. Funeral services will be at 10:30 AM on Friday, August 12 at the Eldora United Methodist Church with Pastor Douglas Harding officiating. Burial will follow at the Eldora Cemetery with full military honors provided by Walter-Sayer Post 182 of the American Legion and Roll-Harless Post 3974 of the VFW. Visitation is from 6:00 to 8:00 PM on Thursday at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora.



John was born September 25, 1919, near Hubbard, Iowa, son of Ralph and Amanda (Granzow) Eller. He attended Evergreen Country School in Sherman Township, near Hubbard, then graduated from Hubbard High School in 1937. Following high school he attended Iowa State University for one year where he was enrolled in their agriculture program. He was a veteran of WWII serving with the U.S. Army ,227th Search Light Battalion, in the Southwest Pacific, then in Japan after the war. On February 28, 1947 he was united in marriage to Vera Bernice Cone in South San Gabriel, California. He farmed northeast of Radcliffe and in 1981 moved to Eldora when he retired. John had been a resident of Valley View Nursing and Rehab Center for the past year.



He was a member of the Eldora United Methodist Church, Walter-Sayer Post 182 of the American Legion, Marshalltown Voiture 568 of the 40-8, and past member of the Radcliffe American Legion. John enjoyed traveling, and when ever he could, attended his annual Army reunion in different locations throughout the United States. John also enjoyed fishing and would regularly join his friends at the American Legion in Eldora to play "Pepper".



He is survived by his wife, Vera; sons, James (Melinda) of Springfield, Missouri, Alan of Marshalltown, and Roger (Lisa) of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; sister, Miriam (Charles Walker) Bjornson of Los Altos, California; and by six grandchildren and five great grandchildren. Preceding him in death were his parents and an infant granddaughter, Anna.
