Irma Dighton

November 24, 1911 — April 8, 2006

Irma Dighton, 94, of Union, Iowa, died from natural causes on Saturday, April 8, 2006 at Oakview Nursing Home in Conrad. Funeral services will be at 1:30 pm on Thursday, April 13, 2006 at the Union Church of Christ with Pastors Rick Schill and Helmer Peterson officiating. Burial will follow at the Union Cemetery. Visitation is from 6 pm to 8 pm on Wednesday at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. Memorials may be directed to the family and will be applied to the outdoor garden project at Oakview.



Irma was born November 24, 1911 in Laurel, Iowa, daughter of Edward and Floy (Hilsabeck) Benson. She was raised in Laurel and attended school there, then spent a few years in Marshalltown. In 1928 Irma was united in marriage to Edward C. Dighton and they made their home in Union. Irma worked for 26 years as a cook for the Union-Whitten Schools and was instrumental in starting one of the first hot-lunch programs in the state of Iowa. She retired in 1973.



She was a member of the Union Church of Christ where she taught Sunday school for many years, and a member of the Union American Legion Auxiliary for 62 years. She enjoyed cooking for her family and friends and also collected antique dishes.



Surviving is her son, Leo E. "Bud" and his wife Darlene Dighton of Union; brothers, Gilbert (Rosemary) Benson of Ontario, California, George (Carol) Boyle of San Diego, California; Robert (Marilyn) Benson of Liscomb, Donald (Beverly) Benson of Chatsworth, California; sister-in-law, Margaret Benson of Marshalltown; granddaughter, Janet Klinebriel of Logan, Ohio; and by three great-grandchildren and eight great-great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Edward on December 18, 1993; sister and brother-in-law, Nola and Harry Etter; brother, Carroll "Benny" Benson; and grandson, Mark Hennigar.
