Herman Bakker, 91, of Holland, Iowa passed away on Tuesday, January 25, 2005, at the Grundy County Memorial Hospital, of natural causes. He attained the age of 91 years, 3 months, and 23 days. Funeral services will be held on Thursday, January 27, 2005, at 3:00 p.m. at the Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church in rural Grundy Center, Iowa. Burial will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Grundy Center, Iowa. Pastor Mat Ooms will officiate. Friends may call at the Engelkes - Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center, Iowa on Wednesday from 4:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 to 8:00, and one hour prior to the service. A memorial fund has been established. Engelkes - Abels Funeral Home is in charge of the arrangements. (319) 824-3319.

Herman was born on October 2, 1913, in Grundy County, Iowa, the son of Menne and Grace (Beninga) Bakker. He was united in marriage to Gladys Heetland on August 31, 1940, in Grundy County. The couple farmed near Stout for six years before moving to their farm North of Holland where they lived until January of 1978 when they moved to their new home in Holland.

Herman was a member of the Lincoln Center Christian Reformed Church in rural Grundy Center, and the Overcomers group. He enjoyed working with horses, ponies, and mules. He also enjoyed visiting with people and he especially enjoyed his great grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife: Gladys; daughter - in - law: Nadine Bakker; 3 brothers: Gerald, John and Louis Bakker and a sister: Elsie Graves.

Survivors include two sons and their wives: Marvin and Janet of Ames, Iowa, and Dale and Joyce of Rock Valley, Iowa; six grandchildren: Anne Standerwick, Lisa Coleman, Sandra Wynja, Brenda Fykstra, Jon Bakker, and David Bakker; ten great grandchildren; a brother: Paul Bakker and his wife Marge of Orange City, Iowa; one brother in law: Joe Graves of Grundy Center, Iowa, 2 sisters in law: Gladys Bakker of Grundy Center, Iowa and Jennie Bakker of Dike, Iowa.
