He served in the United States Navy during the Second World War, and was a member of the American Legion. Returning to Steamboat after the war, he worked with his brothers, Tony and Carl in the Luiken Hardware and Furniture Store and later with Luiken & Sons, Inc. until his retirement.

Founded firmly in his faith in Christ and faithful in his daily walk, he was an excellent example and role model for those who knew him. He was a devoted and loving husband, father, grandfather, father-in-law and uncle and would go to any length to offer help to all who needed it. He admired and respected his friends and cherished the times he could spend with them. He was married to Harriet for 56 years. After her death he married LaDonna Frerichs and they were married for 9 years.
