George Hemmen

George Hemmen, 74, of Steamboat Rock, Iowa, died on Friday, July 29, 2011 at Mercy Medical Center in Des Moines, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 1:30 pm on Monday, August 1, 2011, at the Steamboat Rock Baptist Church with Pastor Harrison Lippert and Bruce Baillie officiating. Burial will follow in the Steamboat Rock Cemetery. Visitation is from 3 pm to 6 pm on Sunday, July 31 at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. George was born August 16, 1936 in Abbot, Iowa, son of Lammert and Fannie (Folkerts) Hemmen. He lived his entire life in Steamboat except for seven years in Cedar Falls, Iowa. George attended country school until the 9th grade then graduated from the Steamboat Rock High School. After graduation he worked for Folkerts and Eckel Construction Co.

On July 27, 1956 George was united in marriage to Kathleen "Kitty" Gast. They moved to Cedar Falls in 1957. George spent six months of training with the National Guard in Fort Leonard Wood, Missouri. Upon returning home, he attended the Waterloo Barber College and then served his apprenticeship in Cedar Falls. In 1963 he purchased the barbershop in Steamboat Rock. George changed vocations in 1976, being employed by the Savings Bank in Eldora and then with Brown/Hurst Insurance Co., Hardin County Savings Bank in Eldora, where he was employed until 2007.

George accepted Christ in 1956 and was a member of the Steamboat Rock Baptist Church. He enjoyed, family, nothing on earth was more important; eating; gardening and lawn care; eating; refinishing furniture; eating; cutting wood; eating; pulling tricks on others; and eating.

He is survived by his wife, Kathleen "Kitty"; daughter Kelly Deedrick and son-in-law, John of Rochester, Minnesota; son, Gregg Hemmen and daughter-in-law, Diane of Rapid City, South Dakota; grandsons, Timothy and Alyssa Deedrick, Matthew Deedrick and Michelle Benson, and Eli Hemmen; granddaughter, Ainslee Hemmen; sisters, Hattie (Mrs. Marvin) DeVries of Grundy Center, Iowa, Florence (Mrs. Fred) Freese of Stout, Iowa, Fannie (Mrs. Leslie) Hilsabeck of Springville, Iowa; and Ann (Mrs. Darwin) Muzzy of Farmington, Minnesota; brother, Jake Hemmen and Wava of Grundy Center; and by many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents; an infant sister; and sisters, Grace Hemmen and Jacobina Grabow.
