Dick D. Smith, 66, of Dike, Iowa, died Sunday, September 5, 2004, at Grundy County Memorial Hospital, in Grundy Center, Iowa, following a lengthy illness. Funeral services will be 10:30 A.M., Wednesday, September 8, 2004, at Liberty Baptist Church in Dike, Iowa, with Pastor Dennis Sanders officiating. Burial will follow at Elmwood Cemetery in Dike, Iowa. Visitation will be Tuesday, September 7, 2004, from

4:00 P.M. to 7:00 P.M., at the Dike Funeral Chapel in Dike. Memorials may be directed to Cedar Valley Hospice.



Dick was born February 3, 1938, the son of Muriel (Grandon) Smith, in New Hartford, Iowa. On June 23, 1956, Dick was united in marriage to Lila Ubben at First Methodist Church in Cedar Falls, Iowa. After their marriage, they lived in New Hartford for one year. They then moved to Cedar Falls and lived there for a couple years. In 1961, they made their home in Dike. Dick worked for the Weyerhauser Paper Company in Waterloo for thirty-eight years. During those years he held several positions and rarely missed a day of work. He loved Iowa Hawkeye Basketball and enjoyed gardening. Dick was very dedicated to his family and loved spending time with them. He always put their needs first.

He is survived by his wife Lila of Dike, Iowa; two sons Dave Smith of Dike, Iowa; Ron Smith of Dike, Iowa; one daughter Diane Midcalf and her husband Jim of Center Point, Iowa; one granddaughter Emma Midcalf; and one sister Loretta Olsson of Waterloo, Iowa.

He was preceded in death by his mother; four sisters Sylvia Hulsing; Evelyn Hulsing; Esther Coates; Beverly Schwartz; and one brother Bud Smith.
