Clinton McMartin

Clinton G. McMartin, 36, of rural Grundy Center, Iowa, died on August 27, 2010 at the University Hospitals and Clinics in Iowa City, Iowa. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am, Tuesday, August 31, 2010 at the Grundy Center High School Gymnasium, with lunch to follow. Pastor Bruce Baillie of the First Presbyterian Church of Steamboat Rock and Pastor Mike Brost of Orchard Hill Church of Grundy Center will be officiating. Burial will follow at 2:30 pm at the Steamboat Rock Cemetery. Visitation will be held at the Grundy Center High School Gymnasium on Monday from 4 pm to 8 pm. A memorial fund is being established in Clinton’s name. Engelkes-Abels Funeral Home in Grundy Center is in charge of the arrangements.






Clinton Glenn McMartin was born July 25, 1974 in Marshalltown, Iowa, son of DeeGene W. and Linda D. (Kuhlman) McMartin. He lived the majority of his life in the family’s farmhouse west of Grundy Center. Clint graduated with the class of 1993 from Wellsburg-Steamboat Rock Community School. He continued his education at Northwestern College in Orange City, Iowa, earning his Bachelor of Arts in Elementary Education, and then his Master’s Degree in Education Administration from Iowa State University.






On June 21, 1997, Clint was united in marriage to Caryn Ann Rose at the Wellsburg Reformed Church. Over the years they were blessed with three children, Madison, Trevor, and Gabriel. His world revolved around his wife and children and Clint’s passion in life was to live for God. He used teaching and coaching as his mission field. Clint had taught 13 years at the elementary level with 11 of those being at the Grundy Center Community School District. He taught fourth and second grades and had just begun teaching kindergarten this year.   He served as the head high school boys track coach at Grundy Center. He also held football coaching positions at both the junior high and high school levels. Clint coached junior high girls basketball, and was an official at numerous athletic competitions.   Over his career his high school boys' track teams had won NICL Conference titles and Clint had been recognized as the NICL Conference Coach of the Year. Clint was a highly respected coach within the track and field community bringing multiple athletes to success at state competition.




He was a member of the First Presbyterian Church of Steamboat Rock where he served as trustee. Clint also taught Sunday School and Vacation Bible School. He was both an avid Iowa Hawkeye and Green Bay Packer football fan. Clint enjoyed hunting, and loved spending time with his family, nieces and nephews.






He is survived by his wife, Caryn; children, Madison age 9, Trevor age 7, and Gabriel age 3; parents, Linda and DeeGene of Grundy Center; sister, Karla (Chad) Hanson of Athens, Georgia; brothers, Jeff (Laurie) McMartin of Pella, Grant McMartin of Chicago, and Daniel (Sharon) McMartin of Ankeny; paternal grandfather, Duncan McMartin of Grundy Center; maternal grandparents, William and Doris Kuhlman of Grundy Center; mother and father-in-law, Jim and Cathy Rose of Steamboat Rock; and brothers-in-law, Chad (Jenn) Rose of Steamboat Rock and Matt (Lacy) Rose of Wellsburg. He was preceded in death by his paternal grandfather, Walter Thye and paternal grandmother, Dorothy McMartin.
