Bernis Bailey

June 12, 1915 — April 21, 2009

Bernis Opal Bailey, the daughter of John D. and Hazel Canfield Rayburn, was born June12, 1915, in Grundy Center, Iowa. She received her early education and graduated from Grundy Center High School. She continued her education at Iowa Teachers College in Cedar Falls, Iowa.

On October 30, 1935, Bernis married Charles Keith Bailey in Marshalltown, Iowa. They made their home in Grundy Center where Bernis taught in a country school. Later she worked for several doctors including, Reedholm, Pruess and Scott and Doctor Gerard. She was a life long member of the United Methodist Church in Grundy Center. Bernis loved nature and spent a lot of time outdoors, going on walks, fishing and camping. She was a wonderful cook, known for her apple pies and potato salad. Most of all, Bernis loved spending time with family and attending her grandchildren's sporting events.

On April 21, 2009, Bernis passed away at Grundy County Memorial Hospital at the age of 93. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband Keith, in 2002.

She is survived by one daughter, Marilyn and her husband Phil Hawn of Grundy Center, IA; on son, Bruce and his wife, Pattie of Reinbeck, IA; grandchildren: Lori Meyers, Brad Hawn, Marci Jansen, Emily Wheeler, and Anne Boyer; great grandchildren: Joseph, Michael and Thomas Meyers, Abby and Bailey Hawn, Allison and Matt Jansen, Elijah Wheeler and Lauren Boyer.
