Bernice Heard

October 3, 1924 — January 4, 2015

Bernice A. Heard, 90, of Steamboat Rock, Iowa died Sunday, January 4, 2015 at the Eldora Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Eldora, Iowa. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Thursday, January 8, 2015 at the First Presbyterian Church in Steamboat Rock, with Pastor Bruce Baillie officiating. Interment will follow in the Steamboat Rock Cemetery. A visitation will be held on Wednesday from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m. at the Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora.

Bernice Arlene Reece, daughter of Numa and Nettie (Norman) Reece was born October 3, 1924 in Tipton Township in Hardin County, Iowa. She received her education in Eldora where she attended Eldora High School. On October 26, 1941, she married Russell "Rex" Heard at his parents' home in Eldora. The couple resided in Owasa until 1955 when they moved to Steamboat Rock where Bernice had worked at the bank for over 40 years. Bernice was very active in church activities and was a Sunday school teacher for more than 30 years. She was Treasurer for the Pine Lake Saddle Club and also served as Secretary and Treasurer for the Steamboat Rock Boat Club. Bernice was also active in the American Legion Auxiliary. As a couple, Rex and Bernie enjoyed spending time camping and vacationing with close friends and family. Bernie also enjoyed playing cards and cooking her famous Sunday dinners for her family.

Survivors include her sons, Michael "Rex" (Cathy) Heard of Steamboat Rock, IA; Steve (Ev) Heard of Tucson, AZ; daughters, Cathy (Jim) Rose and Becky (Steven) Lann both of Steamboat Rock, IA; 10 grandchildren; 25 great-grandchildren; sister, Jessie Reece of Las Vegas, NV; and her special niece, Barb (Bill) Crosser of Cedar Rapids, IA.

In addition to her husband Rex, she was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters, Ruby Huffman and Marge Costello; and her granddaughter, Christa Rose.
