Bernard Roll

December 12, 1922 — April 24, 2007

Bernard E. Roll, 84, of rural Hubbard, Iowa died from natural causes on Tuesday, April 24, 2007 at Ellsworth Municipal Hospital in Iowa Falls. Funeral services will be at 10:30 am on Friday, April 27 at St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora with Pastor David Splett officiating. Burial will follow at Eastlawn Memory Gardens in Eldora. Visitation is from 5 pm to 8 pm on Thursday at Creps-Abels Funeral Home in Eldora. Memorials may be directed to St. Paul Lutheran Church.

Bernard was born December 12, 1922, son of Frank and Josephine (Donner) Roll, on the same farmstead that he presently resided. He attended the Owasa School System and graduated on May 21, 1941. Bernard was baptized and confirmed in St. Mary's Catholic Church in Eldora and later joined St. Paul Lutheran Church in Eldora. On February 17, 1947 Bernard was united in marriage to Betty Mae Balvanz at the Little Brown Church in Nashua. Bernard and Betty moved to their current residence in 1947 where they farmed and raised purebred hogs until their retirement. Bernard had many successes showing his purebred Hampshires. He sold hogs to firms in Hungary, Taiwan, Mexico, Japan and many of the United States. Bernard was very proud of his home and enjoyed tending the lawn and gardening, especially growing tomatoes.

He is survived by his wife, Betty; son, Gary and his wife Teresa of Iowa Falls; grandson Taylor; brother, Frank James Roll and his wife Dorothy of Eldora; and by four brothers-in-law, eight sisters-in-law, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents and a sister, Marjory Oppold.
