Ann “Annie” (Griffel) Portz, 61, of Eldora, Iowa, died Thursday, November 13, 2008, at her home, from complications of ALS. Memorial Services will be 2:30 on Tuesday November 18, 2008 at the South Hardin High School Gymnasium in Eldora. Private family burial will be in the Eldora City Cemetery. Pastor Corey Larson will officiate. Visitation will be on Monday November 17, 2008 from 4:00 pm until 8:00 pm at the Creps – Abels Funeral Home in Eldora, Iowa. Memorials may be directed to the Annie Portz Memorial Scholarship fund at the Hardin County Savings Bank or the ALS Association, Iowa Chapter at 6165 NW 86 th Street Suite 205, Johnston, Iowa 50131


Annie was born August 13, 1947 in Eldora, Iowa the daughter of Dr. R.R. and Ann “Janssen” Griffel. She is a life long resident of Eldora. She graduated from the Eldora High School in 1965. She later attained her Bachelor of Arts from the University of Iowa in 1970. She was united in marriage to Terry Portz on August 29, 1968 in Iowa City, Iowa. Annie taught at the Iowa State Training School for 5 years. She then started teaching second grade for Eldora Community Schools, where she taught for 30 years. Annie was very active in the First Congregational United Church of Christ in Eldora where she served as the Church Council President, and a Confirmation Mentor. She also served as the Eldora – New Providence Teachers Association President.


Surviving is her husband Terry, 2 sons Christopher R. Portz of New Virginia, Iowa, and Timothy John Portz and wife Molly of Minneapolis, Minnesota; 4 grandchildren Keenan and Jack Portz of Des Moines, Iowa, and Daniel and Joseph Portz of Minneapolis, Minnesota; mother Ann Griffel of Eldora, Iowa; 3 sisters Kay Griffel of Denver, Colorado, Jane and husband Pat Conlen of Pinckney, Michigan, and Rae Griffel Hershey of Chapel Hill, North Carolina. She was preceded in death by her father Dr. R.R. Griffel.
